Tuy Hoa Air Base
31st SPS

by Dick Larsen
(1967-1968)

Attached are photos from Security Police activities at th Air Base. On some, I can't really give you much caption information because I don't know the individuals, name of posts, etc. But can tell you all were taken in 1968 and that the towers and the bunker shot are on the base perimeter. Have a lot of photos of the base itself but have restricted this to direct SP material. Sincerely, Dick Larsen

(6) A photo of two SPS [law enforcement] taken elsewhere in the country
(I really have no idea where other than it was not at Tuy Hoa AB).

7) An aerial of the base taken from an HH-43 Pedro helicopter. It is at the
south end of the base along the shoreline looking towards the north. If my
memory serves me, the metal hooches at the bottom of the picture were the
31st SPS barracks area. The small buildings between the hooches are bomb
shelters. The flight line area is in the upper left edge of the picture.

8) The aircraft parking area on the Tuy Hoa flight line with F-100s parked in the revetment areas. This is the area the sappers tried to penetrate during the July 29th attack. But instead they attacked C-130s, probably because they were much larger planes and were on the end of the revetment area so easier to get at.

9) The same HH-43 Pedro mission and shows an area of the perimeter
on the northwest side of the base near the end of the runways. Note the
three towers situated along the perimeter road.

10) On the same mission just from a much higher altitude. The Pedro is south of the base and we are looking back towards the north. The area at the bottom of the photograph is the bomb dump and the runways are at the top. You can also clearly see the perimeter road along which many security positions, bunkers and towers were situated.

11) An HC-130P "Crown" Hercules from the 39th ARRS parked in the th
revetment area. Two aircraft like this were completely destroyed in the July 29th
attack after satchel charges were thrown into the aircraft. The "Crown" aircraft
were used to direct rescue and recovery missions conducted by USAF Jolly Green
crews, including missions over North Vietnam.

12) A exposed U.S. Army POL pipe line supplied fuel to Tuy Hoa Air from the
Vung Ro Bay depot some 12 miles south of the base. Attacks against the line
were common. This one occurred in September 1968. (Col. Aust document)

13) A SSgt from the 31st SPS looks at captured 75mm recoilless rifles as Korean soldiers explain about the weapons. The weapons had been captured by troops from the 28th Republic of Korea Regiment stationed in the Tuy Hoa Area and provided off-base security in the area. The two recoilless rifles were part of a large captured weapons display put on at Tuy Hoa Air Base by the Korea soldiers in the fall of 1968.
