"FRIENDLY FIRE "

by Nick Wirth

It started out as a routine night, Big Al Armstrong & his K-9 Sarge were on Kilo-14. Cap and I had kilo 15 for the night. After departing from the posting truck Al and I went over to the Bravo unit to let him know we were on post and that Al & I would be meeting at our adjoining boundaries sometime during the night.. During that conversation he told us he was new in country, ok fine, I told him not to worry because he had 2 K-9 teams in front of him.. So with peace of mind Al and I go our separate ways into the darkness.. Sometime during that night Al and I came to our boundaries and started bs-ing. All of a sudden the security guy in the bunker opens fire on us with a M-60 machine gun. Needless to say Al and I are on the ground (by the way do you guys remember that talk about us being expendable but the dog isn't, so if you come under attack throw your body over the dog). that's exactly what Al and I did (Yea, Right). I got on the radio and called in to say that the bravo unit was firing at us. He ceased fire, and the SAT team and our own SSgt. Shaw responded. By the time I got up to the bunker the security guy was already removed from his post.. I never found out who he was. However, after being married for 27 years and having 3 wonderful children, I sure the hell am glad he didn't aim that machine gun any lower..........................

The hill (located in background) had a hilltop observation post manned by SP's.

Photo below: V-100 Armored Scout Cars. We referred to them as armored coffee trucks. Security Patrols would bring coffee to their machine gun bunkers. But they did not make special coffee runs to K-9 posts. Handlers on isolated post could only watch the “coffee deliveries” from a distance
