Mayaguez Incident

 

 
Photos Above: Faleagafulu (Phil) Ilaoa was killed in the 
helicopter  crash during the rescue attempt by  the 
56th SPS personnel of the crew of the Mayaguez Incident.
A total of eighteen Security Police personnel were killed.

Phil handled a dog (Kurt 23M5) during his first tour at NKP(1968).
 
Three handlers (without dogs)  were on the CH-53 
 helicopter that crashed during the  rescue attempt. 
 This was  considered the  last combat  action of the Viet Nam war.
 
 
The initial cover-up of SP casualties was for political reasons.  Lies were printed in 
  military newspapers & press releases to deceive the American  public and our allies.
