9. Đà Nẵng AB, Tent City: Sweltering tents, too hot to sleep in by 0800. Some guys stretched out ontop of bunkers or found shade wherever. All agreed the heat radiated downward for a tent's top was oppressive and sucked the air out of your lungs. 1965.

10. Đà Nẵng AB, Tent City: No shade outside and already way too hot to try and sleep in the tent. Maybe the chow hall or airman's club is cooler if their ceiling fans are working. 1965.

For a major dedication ceremony, attendance was poor. True, there were SVN flags, banners, spotlights sweeping a starry night sky, bonfires, and civilians standing around... someone got a medal, and a Vietnamese civilian gave a speech which no one applauded. When it was over, the crowd faded quietly into the night. The memorial, Uplifted Wings, was touted as an eternal flame... but sometime during that dedication night, the flame went out... and... was never re-lit.
